This year the event will have several ballet, opera and drama premieres as well as several guest performances and reruns. The 59th Split Summer Festival will begin with an opera premier by Franz von Supeé, The Mariner's Return; the day after, Richard Wagner's Flying Dutchman will have its premier. The festival is mostly concentrated on operas, but the program also includes different exhibitions and in the recent years some forms of contemporary art like jazz concerts, film screenings, street theatre and various performances.
Regarding drama, a premier of Shakespeare's play Timon of Athens will take place as well as Joël Pommerat's play This Child.
Ballet program includes the "Ballet Week" which is held on Sustipan where various ballet performances will be staged. Ballet Verdi will be performed for the first time to the music from Verdi's operas.
Although the access to the historical centre is limited in this period, every year this is a unique cultural event rich in performances, particularly because of the atmosphere between the walls of the ancient Diocletian palace which makes you feel the true spirit of summer and this Mediterranean town under a starlit sky.
